Chapter Nine

Sabrina

“Thanks for giving it another go.” I opened the gate wide enough to let Henry in, but narrow enough to keep Spencer from running out. “Down, boy,” I called when the Rhodesian ridgeback made the doggy-like decision to try to jump on my guest.

“It’s okay.” Henry patted the dog after it sat obediently. He hefted a zipped canvas bag bearing the Canyon Country Mart logo. “I brought the drinks.”

“Come on in.” I started to close the front door behind him.

“You’re going to leave Spencer out?”

“He loves to sniff around. I’ll keep an eye on him,” I said. It was partially for the dog’s benefit. Spencer did love to investigate the garden. But I also wanted a minute where it could be only the two of us without a wiggly, needy creature in between. “The minute he starts to dig up the landscaping, I’ll call him in.”

Firmly, I pushed the door closed. Turning away, I resisted the urge to take a moment to pump my fist in the air. I’d set out a Henry-sized plan and executed it.

Called him.

Apologized again for the crazy.

Invited him out—well, in—for a make-up date.

Here he was. All handsome in white jeans and black shirt and leather jacket stretched across broad shoulders and what I knew to be delicious abs. That and black zip boots. He knew how to dress to emphasize his wide, sculpted chest and long, lean legs.

“Where can I put this?” He hefted his bag higher, partially obscuring the view of his torso and breaking my stare.

“Oh, wine! In the fridge, or I can get you ice if the fridge is too cold,” I said, discomfited that I didn’t have the right equipment for wine and spirits. “I don’t own one of those fancy temperature-controlled, smoked-glass things that everyone else seems to have.”

“Just point me toward the kitchen and I’ll be fine. If conditions always had to be perfect, no one would drink wine.” His statement of something that obvious was oddly comforting.

Wrapping my hand on his hard biceps was no mistake. I took the opportunity to touch him like I’d been craving and also steered him in the right direction. Then I reluctantly let him go. Henry disappeared in the kitchen. I unmuted the television and turned to one of the popular music stations. My triumphant good mood took over my body and I danced a little jig of happiness. Kind of like when I was a kid and my mom had me and my brother and sister dance the wiggles out.

“The dancing has started already?” Henry’s deep voice penetrated through the bumping beat music.

I whirled around, kind of embarrassed to be caught with my guard down. “Did you tiptoe?”

“I maybe heard some music. Didn’t want to miss the opportunity for a dance party.”

I turned the music louder with the TV remote. I grabbed his hands.

“C’mon, baby…” I sang with the music. I swayed, but moving him was like trying to dance with a brick wall. Ha, he wasn’t ready to let his guard down.
